ICC CONFIRMS CHARGES OF WAR CRIMES AGAINST JOSEPH KONNY OF LORDS RESISTANCE ARMY IN UGANDA

Image
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has confirmed thirty-nine charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity against the Ugandan rebel commander of Lord’s Resistance Army, Joseph Kony.   This is the first time for the Hague-based Court to confirm charges against a suspect in absentia. His trial can however not proceed without him in custody.   More than one hundred thousand people were killed during the LRA’s campaign of terror.   Reacting to the ICC confirmation, victims of the atrocities committed by the rebel reaffirmed the calls for his arrest.   “He should first be arrested, and all these charges be brought against him. However, the victims who suffered the torture cannot wait, some of these victims are also dying”   But Kony has not been seen in public for almost twenty years. It’s not even known if he’s still alive.

PRESIDENT BIYA OF CAMEROON RETURNS HOME AFTER SIX WEEKS OF UNCERTAINTY IN THE COUNTRY

Image
Cameroon's 91-year-old President Paul Biya has been seen in public for the first time in six weeks, dispelling speculation about his ailing health.  His absence from the public eye had led to unfounded rumors of his death.  However, on Monday afternoon, state television showed footage of the president's arrival at the airport in the capital, Yaoundé, on a flight from Switzerland. The government had previously banned the media from discussing the health of Biya — who has been in power since 1982 — classifying it as a matter of national security.  The last time Biya had been seen was on September 8, when he attended a China-Africa summit in Beijing. #Hasbamedia #PaulBiya #Cameroon
